A digital perm is gaining popularity for their ability to create soft, natural-looking curls with a modern twist.

It is a type of hair treatment that uses heated rods and a special solution to create loose, natural-looking curls or waves.
The process uses digitally controlled heating rods to curl the hair, helping to break and reform the bonds in the hair, allowing it to take on a new shape.

What is the difference between digital perm and traditional perm?

  1. Curl Pattern

Digital Perm: Creates softer, looser curls or waves from middle parts. Ideal for a natural, beachy look.
Ordinary Perm: Results in tighter, more uniform curls. Suitable for a more defined and structured curl pattern or add volumes on the top.
  1. Method of Application

Digital Perm: Uses heated rods controlled by a digital machine.
Ordinary Perm: Involves wrapping hair around perm rods or rollers and applying a chemical solution without heat.
  1. Heat Usage

Digital Perm: Heat is essential, helping to reshape the hair bonds more effectively.
Ordinary Perm: Relies solely on the chemical solution to alter the hair structure.
  1. Longevity and Maintenance

Digital Perm: Typically lasts 3 to 6 months. Curls gradually relax over time.
Ordinary Perm: Also lasts several months, but may require more frequent touch-ups to maintain tight curls.
  1. Texture and Feel

Digital Perm: Results in a more natural-looking texture and feel. Hair appears softer and more touchable.
Ordinary Perm: Can sometimes feel more rigid due to the tighter curls.
  1. Versatility

Digital Perm: Offers versatile styling options. You can easily switch between curly and straight styles.
Ordinary Perm: Provides a consistent curl pattern, but may not be as versatile in styling.
  1. Hair Type Suitability

Digital Perm: Best suited for shoulder-length hair or longer. Works well on most hair types but particularly effective on Asian hair.
Ordinary Perm: Can be applied to various hair lengths and types, but results may vary based on hair texture and condition.

By weighing these pros and cons, you can determine if a digital perm is the right choice for your hair goals and lifestyle.

Benefits of Digital Perms

  1. Natural-Looking Curls:

Digital perms create soft, loose curls that look more natural compared to the tighter curls from traditional perms. This gives a more effortless, beachy wave appearance.
  2. Versatile Styling:

Digital perms offer greater versatility in styling. You can wear your hair curly or straight, and the curls tend to blend well with natural hair growth.
  3. Long-Lasting Results:

The curls from a digital perm can last between 3 to 6 months, gradually relaxing over time. This longevity means fewer salon visits for touch-ups.
  4. Improved Hair Texture:

Digital perms can enhance the texture and volume of fine or limp hair, making it appear fuller and more vibrant.
  5. Low Maintenance:

Once the curls are set, digital perms require minimal daily maintenance. Simply using the right hair products and a proper hair care routine can keep the curls looking great.
  6. Customized Results:

Digital perms allow for customization in curl size and pattern, tailored to the client's hair type and desired look. This personalization leads to more satisfactory results.

Disadvantages of Digital Perms

  1. Not Good at Making Volume on the Top:

Heat is applied during the perming process, so it is dangerous to perm too close to the roots. It is therefore not suitable for styles with a volume at the roots.
  2. Lengthy Process:

The treatment process can take several hours, which might be inconvenient for some people.
  3. Initial Fragility:

The first 48 hours after getting a digital perm are crucial. During this period, the hair is more fragile, and activities like washing, tying, or excessive touching should be avoided.
  4. Not Suitable for All Hair Types:

While digital perms work well on most hair types, they might not be as effective on very short hair or extremely coarse hair. The results can also vary based on hair conditions.
  5. Potential Damage:

Despite being less damaging than traditional perms, the use of chemicals and heat still poses a risk of damage, especially if the hair is already compromised.
  6. Specialized Aftercare Required:

Maintaining a digital perm requires the use of specific hair care products designed for curly hair, as well as gentle handling to preserve the curl pattern.

What process is involved in Digital Perm?

  1. Consultation

The session begins with a consultation with your hairdresser.
The condition of your hair will be assessed and the desired results will be discussed.

  2. Shampoo & Haircut

We create the base design with a haircut before the perms.
As your hair will be shorter after the perm, we will carefully check your target length and leave your hair slightly longer at this point.

  3. Application

We offer 5 different perm lotions to suit your hair type, condition and desired style.
Allow your hair to develop at room temperature for a few minutes, checking the elasticity of your hair regularly to avoid over-processing.

  4. Rinse and Hair Treatments

Hair will be washed gently and carefully to avoid leaving any perm lotion on your hair.
To avoid over-processing and further damage to your hair, we offer several types of hair treatment.

  5. Winding

Wind hair onto the heated rods.
We have several sizes of heated rods to create your desired design, as well as heat protection to prevent any unnecessary damage to your hair from the heating process.

  6. Heating

Connect cables from a Japanese digital perm machine to heated rods.
Secure heated rods with heat guards to prevent discomfort and heat for 10~30 minutes.

  7. Neutralising

Apply the neutraliser to re-bond your hair and hold the curls in place, leave to develop for 5 minutes at room temperature.

  8. Rinse and Hair Treatments

Rinse out the neutraliser and apply the treatments for longer lasting curls and hydrated hair.

  9. Styling

Finally, style your hair with a hairdryer.

Digital Perm Q&A

How long does a digital perm last?

A digital perm typically lasts between 3 to 6 months, depending on various factors such as hair type, maintenance, and how well the curls are preserved. Over time, the curls will gradually relax and return to their natural state.

Is a digital perm damaging to the hair?

Like any chemical treatment, a digital perm can potentially cause damage to the hair if not done properly or if the hair is already compromised.
However, HAYATO SALONS' digital perm techniques use gentler formulations, heat control and heat protection treatments that can minimise damage compared to older perm methods.

Can I wash my hair after getting a digital perm?

It's generally recommended to wait at least 48 hours after getting a digital perm before washing your hair.
This allows the curls to set properly and ensures that the chemical solution has enough time to work effectively.

How should I maintain my digital perm?

To maintain a digital perm, it's important to use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for curly hair.
Avoiding excessive heat styling and using products that provide moisture and definition can also help preserve curls and prevent frizz.

Can I colour or dye my hair after getting a digital perm?

It's generally best to wait at least two weeks after a digital perm before colouring or dyeing your hair.
Colouring immediately after a perm can put extra stress on the hair and can lead to damage or uneven results.

Can I swim or expose my hair to water after getting a digital perm?

It's generally recommended to avoid exposing your hair to water, especially chlorinated or saltwater, for at least 48 hours after getting a digital perm.
After this initial period, it's important to rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming to remove any chemicals or salt that could potentially damage your curls.

Is there a specific length requirement for getting a digital perm?

While digital perms can be done on various hair lengths, they tend to work best on hair that is at least shoulder-length or longer.
Shorter hair may not hold curls as effectively due to the limited length available for wrapping around the perm rods.

Are there any specific aftercare tips I should follow after getting a digital perm?

After getting a digital perm, it's important to follow a few aftercare tips to maintain the health and longevity of your curls.
These may include avoiding excessive brushing or combing, using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to prevent frizz, and getting regular trims to remove any split ends and maintain the shape of the curls.
