Experience soft, long-lasting curls with a Digital Perm at Hayato Tokyo Roppongi.
Our expert stylists offer specialized aftercare to maintain natural, beautiful waves.
Digital perm is a technique that uses a special heated rod and perm solution to create soft, natural curls or waves.
It is known for producing curls that hold well even when the hair is dry, and for its long-lasting results.
The curls resemble those created with a curling iron, giving a three-dimensional look that makes daily styling easier.
Choosing the right salon is crucial when it comes to achieving loose, big and beachy curls/waves.
Hayato Salons stands out as a top destination for Digital Perm, with over 30 years of experience in the field.
We guarantee beautifully wavy/curly hair while maintaining hair health and integrity.
What is the difference between Digital Perm and Traditional Cold Perm?
Both digital perms and cold perms create curls and waves, but they differ in process, finish, and which hair types or styles they best suit.
Understanding the characteristics of each can help you choose the right perm for your desired look.
Digital PermThis method uses a special heated rod and perm solution to reshape the hair structure with heat. Pros:
Cons:
Ideal For:✔ Clients who want natural, curling-iron-like waves ✔ Whose hair is thick/strong and doesn’t hold a curl easily ✔ Whose scalp is sensitive and wish to avoid chemicals touching the skin |
Cold PermThe cold perm is a traditional method that reshapes hair using chemical reactions without heat. When a salon menu lists “perm” without further details, it usually refers to this cold perm. It can create a wide range of looks—from soft, natural waves to tight curls such as afro or spiral styles. Pros:
Cons:
Ideal For:✔ Clients who want natural root volume ✔ Clients hwho prefer soft waves or tighter curls ✔ Clients who enjoy changing hairstyles frequently |
Which One Should You Choose?
✔️ Choose a Digital Perm if you want loose, soft waves, especially for medium~long hair length.
✔️ Choose a Cold Perm if you want stronger, tighter curls or extra volume, especially for short hair or finer hair types.
What process is involved in Digital Perm?
-
Consultation
The session begins with a consultation with your hairdresser.
The condition of your hair will be assessed and the desired results will be discussed. -
Shampoo & Haircut
We create the base design with a haircut before the perms.
As your hair will be shorter after the perm, we will carefully check your target length and leave your hair slightly longer at this point. -
Application
We offer 5 different perm lotions to suit your hair type, condition and desired style.
Allow your hair to develop at room temperature for a few minutes, checking the elasticity of your hair regularly to avoid over-processing. -
Rinse and Hair Treatments
Hair will be washed gently and carefully to avoid leaving any perm lotion on your hair.
To avoid over-processing and further damage to your hair, we offer several types of hair treatment. -
Winding
Wind hair onto the heated rods.
We have several sizes of heated rods to create your desired design, as well as heat protection to prevent any unnecessary damage to your hair from the heating process. -
Heating
Connect cables from a Japanese digital perm machine to heated rods.
Secure heated rods with heat guards to prevent discomfort and heat for 10~30 minutes. -
Neutralising
Apply the neutraliser to re-bond your hair and hold the curls in place, leave to develop for 5 minutes at room temperature.
-
Rinse and Hair Treatments
Rinse out the neutraliser and apply the treatments for longer lasting curls and hydrated hair.
-
Styling
Finally, style your hair with a hairdryer.
Keeping your digital perm looking beautiful and long-lasting requires proper home care after your salon visit.
Because digital perms use heat to reshape and set the hair, the way you care for your curls has a major impact on their longevity and texture.
Below, we’ll explain everything from immediate aftercare tips to daily maintenance, drying techniques, and styling advice.
【1】Be Extra Careful for the First 48 Hours
Right after your digital perm, the curls have not yet fully stabilised.
Improper handling during this time can cause the curls to loosen or lose their shape.
For at least 24 hours — ideally 48 hours — avoid the following:
-
Shampooing or wetting your hair
-
Tying or clipping your hair tightly
-
Applying pressure with a tight cap or hard pillow while sleeping
If the curls are deformed during this period, they may fall out or leave uneven marks.
If you must tie your hair, use a soft scrunchie and tie it loosely to avoid tension.
【2】Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner
After a perm, the hair is more delicate and sensitive to harsh cleansers.
Strong shampoos can shorten the curl’s lifespan and lead to dryness or frizz.
Recommended types:
-
Sulfate-free shampoos (gentle and low-foaming)
-
Amino acid–based shampoos
-
Moisturising shampoos for permed or coloured hair
Look for products rich in moisturising and repairing ingredients.
At HAYATO TOKYO, we offer personalised home-care product recommendations tailored to each client’s hair type and service.
【3】Make Conditioning and Moisture Care a Habit
Because digital perms use heat, they can alter your hair’s internal moisture balance.
Regular hydration and nourishment are key to maintaining shine and bounce.
-
Apply a conditioner or treatment mainly to the mid-lengths and ends after every shampoo.
-
Use an intensive repair treatment once or twice a month for extra moisture.
-
Protect your curls during the day with a leave-in treatment or hair oil.
Curls are more prone to friction and dryness, so applying a light oil before blow-drying helps prevent damage and keeps them smooth.
【4】Drying Tips
Digital perms have a unique feature — the curls form more when the hair is dry.
Your drying technique greatly affects the final look, so follow these steps carefully:
Steps:
-
Gently pat the hair dry with a towel — avoid rubbing.
-
Apply a leave-in treatment to the mid-lengths and ends. Detangle gently with your fingers (avoid using a brush).
-
Lift the roots and dry from the scalp first.
-
Twist and scrunch the ends with your hands as you dry. You can also wrap small sections around your fingers while drying for more definition.
-
Use a low-speed, warm airflow and lift the curls gently with your hands.
-
Finish with cool air to lock in the shape.
Using a diffuser attachment helps distribute airflow evenly and create a softer, more natural finish.
【5】Styling Tips
Daily styling is easy with a digital perm.
In the morning, simply dampen your hair slightly and twist the ends while drying — that’s it!
For added movement or texture, choose styling products based on your preferred finish:
-
Mousse: for soft texture and light, bouncy volume
-
Cream or milk type: for natural separation and control
-
Oil type: for shine and smoothness
【6】Everyday Habits to Make Your Perm Last Longer
-
Avoid daily use of high-temperature irons or curling wands
-
Always dry your hair after washing — never leave it wet
-
Handle your hair gently to prevent friction and dryness
-
Visit the salon regularly for treatments and trims to maintain the curl’s balance
By following these habits, you can significantly extend the life of your digital perm and keep your curls beautiful for months.
How long does a digital perm last?
A digital perm typically lasts between 3 to 6 months, depending on various factors such as hair type, maintenance, and how well the curls are preserved.
Over time, the curls will gradually relax and return to their natural state.
Is a digital perm damaging to the hair?
Like any chemical treatment, a digital perm can potentially cause damage to the hair if not done properly or if the hair is already compromised.
However, HAYATO TOKYO's digital perm techniques use gentler formulations, heat control and heat protection treatments that can minimise damage compared to older perm methods.
Can I wash my hair after getting a digital perm?
It's generally recommended to wait at least 48 hours after getting a digital perm before washing your hair.
This allows the curls to set properly and ensures that the chemical solution has enough time to work effectively.
How should I maintain my digital perm?
To maintain a digital perm, it's important to use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for curly hair.
Avoiding excessive heat styling and using products that provide moisture and definition can also help preserve curls and prevent frizz.
Can I colour or dye my hair after getting a digital perm?
It's generally best to wait at least two weeks after a digital perm before colouring or dyeing your hair.
Colouring immediately after a perm can put extra stress on the hair and can lead to damage or uneven results.
Can I swim or expose my hair to water after getting a digital perm?
It's generally recommended to avoid exposing your hair to water, especially chlorinated or saltwater, for at least 48 hours after getting a digital perm.
After this initial period, it's important to rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming to remove any chemicals or salt that could potentially damage your curls.
Is there a specific length requirement for getting a digital perm?
While digital perms can be done on various hair lengths, they tend to work best on hair that is at least shoulder-length or longer.
Shorter hair may not hold curls as effectively due to the limited length available for wrapping around the perm rods.
Are there any specific aftercare tips I should follow after getting a digital perm?
After getting a digital perm, it's important to follow a few aftercare tips to maintain the health and longevity of your curls.
These may include avoiding excessive brushing or combing, using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to prevent frizz, and getting regular trims to remove any split ends and maintain the shape of the curls.
Does Digital Perm work for Caucasian's fine and soft hair?
We generally do not recommend perming for Caucasian hair, as the hair tends to be finer and softer than Asian hair.
As a result, a perm may not produce the same level of bounce or definition you might expect.
In many cases, the outcome is a loose wave rather than a firm curl, and the effect may not be long-lasting.
However, at HAYATO TOKYO, we understand these differences in hair texture and specialise in adapting our techniques to suit each individual.
Depending on your hair condition and desired style, we may still be able to achieve your preferred look.
