From refreshing waves between washes to caring for the ends, our guidance helps you maintain your new style with confidence.
Digital perm is a technique that uses a special heated rod and perm solution to create soft, natural curls or waves.
It is known for producing curls that hold well even when the hair is dry, and for its long-lasting results.
The curls resemble those created with a curling iron, giving a three-dimensional look that makes daily styling easier.
Choosing the right salon is crucial when it comes to achieving loose, big and beachy curls/waves.
Hayato Salons stands out as a top destination for Digital Perm, with over 30 years of experience in the field.
We guarantee beautifully wavy/curly hair while maintaining hair health and integrity.
What styles Can a Digital Perm Create?
A digital perm may be suitable for:
-
Loose waves: gentle movement through medium or long hair.
-
Soft, rounded ends: a subtle bend that adds shape to an otherwise straight style.
-
Bouncy curls: more visible definition through the lengths and ends.
-
Movement in layered hair: curls that complement the haircut and frame the face.
The result depends on your starting length, haircut, hair condition and styling.
A reference photograph helps us understand your preference, but the same curl pattern will look different on different heads of hair.
Digital Perm vs Cold Perm: Which Should You Choose?
Both digital perms and cold perms create curls and waves, but they differ in process, finish, and which hair types or styles they best suit.
Understanding the characteristics of each can help you choose the right perm for your desired look.
Feature |
Digital perm |
Cold perm / body wave |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Perm solution combined with heated rods | Perm solution without the heated-rod stage |
| Curl appearance | Curls usually become more noticeable as the hair dries | Curls are often more pronounced when damp |
| Common styling goals | Soft bends, loose waves and curls through the lengths | All-over texture, shorter styles and movement closer to the roots |
| Daily styling | Shape sections with your fingers while drying | Scrunch or diffuse with suitable styling products |
| Choosing a method | Depends on hair condition, length and desired shape | Depends on hair condition, length and desired shape |
Neither method is the best choice for every client.
Both involve chemical processing, and a cold perm is not automatically suitable for damaged hair simply because it does not use heated rods.
Is a Digital Perm Suitable for Your Hair?
Straight, Medium or Long Hair
A digital perm can add shape to suitable straight hair, particularly when there is enough length to wrap the rods and create your chosen curl.
Very short styles or volume directly at the roots may be better approached with another technique.
Fine or Soft Hair
Fine hair needs an individual assessment.
Some clients can achieve a soft wave, while others may find that large curls relax quickly.
We consider the thickness, elasticity and condition of your strands when discussing realistic results.
Coloured, Bleached or Previously Straightened Hair
Please tell us about all chemical services still present in your hair, including older highlights, home colour, Japanese straightening and smoothing treatments.
Colour-treated hair may be suitable, depending on its condition and treatment history.
Bleached, fragile or repeatedly processed hair needs particular care.
A digital perm may not be advisable, and we may recommend a different style or postponing the service.
Conditioning treatments do not make every damaged hair type suitable for perming.
If you are unsure, contact our HAYATO LONDON team before booking.
Include clear photographs of your current hair, your desired style and details of previous treatments.
What process is involved in Digital Perm?
-
Consultation
The session begins with a consultation with your hairdresser.
The condition of your hair will be assessed and the desired results will be discussed. -
Shampoo & Haircut
We create the base design with a haircut before the perms.
As your hair will be shorter after the perm, we will carefully check your target length and leave your hair slightly longer at this point. -
Application
We offer 5 different perm lotions to suit your hair type, condition and desired style.
Allow your hair to develop at room temperature for a few minutes, checking the elasticity of your hair regularly to avoid over-processing. -
Rinse and Hair Treatments
Hair will be washed gently and carefully to avoid leaving any perm lotion on your hair.
To avoid over-processing and further damage to your hair, we offer several types of hair treatment. -
Winding
Wind hair onto the heated rods.
We have several sizes of heated rods to create your desired design, as well as heat protection to prevent any unnecessary damage to your hair from the heating process. -
Heating
Connect cables from a Japanese digital perm machine to heated rods.
Secure heated rods with heat guards to prevent discomfort and heat for 10~30 minutes. -
Neutralising
Apply the neutraliser to re-bond your hair and hold the curls in place, leave to develop for 5 minutes at room temperature.
-
Rinse and Hair Treatments
Rinse out the neutraliser and apply the treatments for longer lasting curls and hydrated hair.
-
Styling
Finally, style your hair with a hairdryer.
After Your Appointment
Follow your stylist's advice on the first wash.
You may be advised to wait around 24–48 hours, depending on the products and procedure used.
Avoid pulling freshly permed hair into tight hairstyles.
On Wash Days
Choose a gentle shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair.
Apply conditioner mainly through the lengths and ends, detangle carefully and press out excess water with a towel instead of rubbing.
When Drying
Use an appropriate leave-in product and heat protection when needed.
Begin at the roots, then gently twist or scrunch sections as your stylist demonstrates.
Use a comfortable heat setting and avoid stretching the curls straight while drying.
Between Appointments
Refresh flattened sections with a little water and reshape them as they dry.
Limit excessive heat styling, and discuss trims or conditioning treatments if the ends become dry or the shape feels unbalanced.
For additional hair care, ask whether Premium Moistruising Hair Treatment would suit your hair and appointment plan.
How long does a digital perm last?
A digital perm commonly lasts around 3 to 6 months, although the visible curl can soften sooner.
Hair condition, curl size, haircut and home styling all affect how long the result looks its best.
Your stylist will discuss what is realistic for your hair.
How long does the appointment take?
A digital perm involves several stages, including assessment, processing, heating, neutralizing and finishing.
The total appointment normally takes around 3 to 4 hours, but it depends on your hair and any additional services.
Please confirm the full duration when booking, particularly if you have travel plans afterwards.
Will a digital perm damage my hair?
A digital perm uses both chemicals and heat, so some risk of dryness or damage remains even when the service is performed carefully.
Assessing your hair and controlling the process help reduce unnecessary stress, but cannot make the treatment damage-free.
Can I have colour and a digital perm together? Can I colour my hair after getting a digital perm?
Potentially you can, but it's generally best to wait at least 2 weeks after a digital perm before colouring your hair.
Colouring immediately after a perm can put extra stress on the hair and can lead to damage or uneven results.
Please discuss both services before booking.
Will a digital perm straighten my roots or remove frizz?
A standard digital perm is designed to add curls or waves.
It does not automatically straighten natural curls at the roots or resolve every type of frizz.
If you want smoother roots as well as curled ends, ask for an assessment before choosing a service.
Japanese Straightening is a different treatment.
Can men or clients with short hair get a digital perm?
Suitability depends on the length and condition of the hair and the style you want.
There must be enough length to work with the heated rods.
For shorter cuts, a cold perm may provide a more suitable way to create texture or volume.
How should I maintain my digital perm?
To maintain a digital perm, it's important to use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for curly hair.
Avoiding excessive heat styling and using products that provide moisture and definition can also help preserve curls and prevent frizz.
Can I swim or expose my hair to water after getting a digital perm?
It's generally recommended to avoid exposing your hair to water, especially chlorinated or saltwater, for at least 48 hours after getting a digital perm.
After this initial period, it's important to rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming to remove any chemicals or salt that could potentially damage your curls.
Are there any specific aftercare tips I should follow after getting a digital perm?
After getting a digital perm, it's important to follow a few aftercare tips to maintain the health and longevity of your curls.
These may include avoiding excessive brushing or combing, using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to prevent frizz, and getting regular trims to remove any split ends and maintain the shape of the curls.
Does digital perm work for Caucasian's fine and soft hair?
We generally do not recommend perming for Caucasian hair, as the hair tends to be finer and softer than Asian hair.
As a result, a perm may not produce the same level of bounce or definition you might expect.
In many cases, the outcome is a loose wave rather than a firm curl, and the effect may not be long-lasting.
However, at HAYATO LONDON, we understand these differences in hair texture and specialise in adapting our techniques to suit each individual.
Depending on your hair condition and desired style, we may still be able to achieve your preferred look.
Please feel free to contact us for a consultation, we would be happy to advise you further.
